Murray State University associate professor of microbiology Dr. Chris Lennon attended the PEGS Boston Summit in Boston, Massachusetts, in May 2025 with support from the KCV GOAL Fund. The summit, recognized as a leading global event for biologics and protein engineering, brought together experts and innovators to share the latest advances in drug development, antibody and protein engineering, immunotherapy, radiotherapy and AI-driven research. In addition to scientific presentations, the event offered opportunities for collaboration and engagement with industry leaders.

The GOAL Fund supports faculty, staff and students from KCV partner institutions in attending conferences and events that promote innovation and commercialization. Participants can apply for funds to cover related expenses, with the expectation that they will gain valuable knowledge, establish networks and enhance their skills. Dr. Lennon shared more about his experience attending PEGS Boston and receiving support from the GOAL Fund.

Can you tell us about what PEGS Boston is and why you wanted to attend?

PEGS Boston is the premier protein production and engineering conference for the industry. I wanted to attend to further expand my understanding of the necessary steps to commercialize my technology. The conferences I generally attend are almost exclusively geared toward basic research and the academy, so it was very eye opening to attend, network, and most importantly, identify the benchmarks needed to make my technology attractive to industry.

What did you gain from the conference that will impact your work?

This conference provided valuable insights into the tangible steps I need to take in order to make my technology commercially viable. Additionally, I was not only able to learn about the cutting-edge methods that I have since incorporated into my research program, but I was able to establish industry connections with the very companies I hope to eventually license my technology to.

Why is it important to attend professional opportunities such as PEGS Boston?

While video conferences and zoom meetings are both useful and valuable, they are a poor substitute for face-to-face learning and networking. It is in the moments “in between” – at coffee breaks, during Q and A sessions and events after the presentations – where true and honest connections are made.
