KCV GOAL Fund Fuels Faculty Innovation at Murray State University

What does it take to turn scientific research into a commercial opportunity? For Dr. Christopher Lennon, professor of microbiology at Murray State University, attending the 22nd Annual Protein and Antibody Engineering Summit (PEGS) offered a chance to explore just that. With support from the KCV GOAL Fund, Dr. Lennon connected with industry professionals, learned more about bringing protein-based technologies to market and gained new perspectives on the commercial potential of his own research.
The KCV GOAL Fund helps faculty, staff and students from partner institutions pursue professional development opportunities that support innovation and commercialization. By providing financial assistance for experiences like PEGS, the fund helps researchers build connections, gain practical knowledge and explore what's possible beyond the lab.
"This experience has taken away much of the mystery surrounding how companies make and market protein-based products."
We caught up with Dr. Lennon to hear more about his experience, what he learned and what's next for his research.
What was your experience like at PEGS?
PEGS was incredible! It allowed me to not only attend scientific talks on emerging technologies, but to also receive technical training on various commercialization considerations such as identifying customers, scaling up, product validation and effective manufacturing practices. I was inspired to identify specific situations where my technology can improve over those that are currently available.
I was also able to participate in several networking events. I spoke with people who were in my shoes not that long ago and how they were able to make the leap from idea/technology to starting a company.
How did you learn about this opportunity?
A collaborator of mine at another university started a company a few years ago based on protein engineering technology. He told me that if I wanted to learn more about commercialization of technology related to protein engineering that I should attend PEGS. Jericho Wilkerson at KCV informed me about the GOAL Fund.
What are your next steps?
My technology is a method for protein purification, so identifying a unique biotherapeutic or industrial product of value the technology is suited for is the next hurdle I need to clear.
Additionally, I feel that I have a much better understanding of the benchmarks needed to improve my technology to the point where it is commercially viable. I am looking forward to hopefully starting a company and acquiring external seed funding in the next few years!
Could the KCV GOAL Fund help you take the next step toward commercialization?
Whether you're looking to expand your knowledge, connect with industry experts or explore the commercial potential of your research, the KCV GOAL Fund can help you access professional development opportunities that support your goals.
