Inside KCV INVENT: Bridging Next-Gen Talent with Kentucky Startups

Transitioning from the classroom into the professional world can be both an exciting and daunting step at the start of a career. Kentucky Commercialization Ventures (KCV), an initiative of the Kentucky Science & Technology Corporation (KSTC), is helping bridge that gap through the KCV INVENT program. With support from the National Science Foundation, INVENT connects aspiring talent with innovative startups across Kentucky.

In partnership with Northern Kentucky University's (NKU) Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE), we provide hands-on training in commercialization and startup growth before matching candidates with startup partners based on their skills and the needs of the company. Through INVENT, growing businesses gain access to trained talent ready to contribute, while participants gain meaningful experience in a startup environment.

Before an internship is assigned, candidates must first complete our Innovation Fellowship Program or approved coursework through NKU. Designed to help transform ideas, research and intellectual property in market-ready ventures, the Fellowship program offers direct coaching, mentorship and real-world exercises that prepare participants to contribute to entrepreneurial environments.

Keon Henderson experienced this process firsthand through his internship with Essential Innovations. His experience, along with the perspective of Abigail Cheek, chief of systems and operations at Essential Innovations, offers a look at INVENT from both sides of the internship.

Discovering KCV INVENT

With a bachelor's degree in business administration, Henderson first heard about the KCV INVENT opportunity through Kentucky State University. During his time as an undergraduate student, he was actively involved in sports business and leadership initiatives that shaped his passion for innovation, community impact and meaningful connections within the sports industry. Those experiences gave Henderson an existing interest in entrepreneurship and innovation that aligned closely with what INVENT offered.

Prior to starting his internship, Henderson completed our Innovation Fellowship Program. The training helped prepare Henderson for his placement with host company Essential Innovations.

Cheek saw the value of that preparation firsthand when Henderson joined Essential Innovations.

Joining Essential Innovations

Essential Innovations is an early-stage, Techstars-backed company located in Louisville, Kentucky. Its mission is to help employers and workforce nonprofits access funding to support hiring and upskilling. Through its core product, CreditCapture, Essential Innovations uses a pay-for-success model in which its success is tied to results for its clients.

Given INVENT's goals of fostering the next Kentucky talent pipelines for early-stage companies, hosting Henderson was a natural fit for Cheek and her team. In a startup environment like Essential Innovations, interns have the opportunities to contribute to the company's work rather than take on placeholder tasks. The company needed interns who could work alongside a small leadership team, adapt to evolving needs and take initiative as new challenges arose.

Henderson joined Essential Innovations on the systems and operations side of the company's go-to-market. His work spanned in marketing, business development and client outreach, including supporting digital marketing efforts, researching prospective partners and managing CRM data. Through these responsibilities, Henderson gained firsthand insight into how an innovation-driven startup operates.

A Lasting Impact

By connecting trained talent with early-stage businesses, the KCV INVENT program is designed to benefit both interns and the companies that host them. For Essential Innovations, Cheek highlights the intentionality founders must bring to the program and the role host companies play in creating a valuable experience for both sides.

For Henderson, the INVENT internship offered far more than hands-on experience. It also contributed to his continued personal and professional growth. Today, he applies his skills developed through his experience at Essential Innovations as the founder of his own media company, ASTAR Impact Sports Network.

Beyond the skills he developed, Henderson points to the people he met as one of the highlights of his experience. The mentors, staff and professionals around him reinforced the value of mentorship in building a successful career.
